Flutilities, for flute (1993, 7')
Premiered by Barbara Siesel, New York, 1993
PROGRAM NOTES
When I started to compose "Flutilities" I was more interested in exploring the aggressive and rhythmic chracater of the flute rather than its bucolic and soothing aspects. In proceeding with the composition, however, I felt the need for a more lyric and meditative middle section, which is why the work consists of four short movements to be played without interruption: Rhythmic-Ballad-Cadenza-Hectic. "Flutilities" was inspired by the hectic pace of life in New York and by its counterpart, i.e. the necessary (and so valuable) moments of quiet.
